Theater in der Altstadt
The “Theater in der Altstadt” in Merano’s historic centre is a vibrant cultural hub: a stage for contemporary theatre beyond the mainstream.
TidA – short for Theater in der Altstadt, meaning “Theatre in the Old Town” – is more than just a stage. Housed in the vaulted cellar beneath the iconic Kurhaus at Freiheitsstraße 27, it has become one of Merano’s most dynamic cultural spaces. Founded in 1988 by Rudi Ladurner, who returned from Vienna with the vision of creating a progressive urban theatre, TidA quickly grew into a creative laboratory for bold ideas and new formats. It shares its early roots with the experimental Theater in der Klemme and the feminist performance group Phenomena, and has long since established itself as a cornerstone of Merano’s independent performing arts scene. In its formative years, TidA shared the intimate cellar space with other ensembles. Today, it is known for its diverse and daring repertoire – ranging from experimental theatre and political cabaret to family-friendly productions and socially engaged performances. The unique atmosphere of the vaulted cellar – with its exposed stonework, soft lighting and Art Nouveau surroundings – creates a sense of closeness and immediacy that is essential to the theatre’s identity.
TidA regularly stages its own productions and also invites guest artists and theatre groups from across South Tyrol and beyond. What sets it apart is its fearless engagement with contemporary themes – often political, always emotionally resonant – presented in a setting that encourages exchange and participation. The venue’s transformation mirrors that of Merano itself: once a quiet spa town, now a place where culture thrives in unexpected spaces.
After performances, the foyer and the small outdoor terraces offer room for dialogue, reflection, and conversation – making TidA not just a theatre, but a space of encounter. Its appeal is particularly strong among younger audiences and those seeking an alternative to conventional cultural programming.
The Theater in der Altstadt is where Merano’s past and present meet on stage – rebellious yet grounded, experimental yet accessible. A mirror of the city’s creative spirit, TidA is a place for those who believe that theatre should ask questions, provoke thought, and remain deeply connected to its time and place.
Public transport
From the train station, the most convenient option is to board one of the city lines (1 or4) to reach the "Meran, Theaterplatz" stop, followed by a 5-minute walk.
Parking
There are reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities in Galileistraße. Please note that this is a traffic-calmed zone. Entry to this zone is only permitted if you have deposited your disabled parking permit and your car's licence plate number with the local council Gemeinde Meran in advance.
Using the "Car Park Finder" app, you can view available spaces in real time.
Bicycle parking spaces are located in Freiheitsstraße at the junction with Sparkassenstraße and in Galileistraße in front of the town hall. Take care not to park bicycles and e-rollers carelessly. They can pose a danger to blind and visually impaired people as they create obstacles to safely walking along paths and finding entrances. People in wheelchairs and parents with pushchairs can also be hindered by carelessly parked bicycles. Please use the bicycle parking spaces provided.
Author's tip
The right behaviour and good manners make visiting cultural sites more enjoyable.
Silent phones and quiet voices
make for a better experience – for you and everyone else.
Accessibility matters:
Not all cultural sites are fully accessible, but where they are, give priority to those who need it. It’s a matter of dignity – for them and for you.
Check emergency exits and evacuation plans
– just in case. If there’s an emergency, stay calm, follow the signs, and head to the assembly point outside.
Most of this might seem obvious – and it is! But a little reminder never hurts. By being calm, mindful, and respectful, you’re making a big difference – for yourself, your surroundings, and future generations.
Open during performances: all-season
