CleanUP Days on the Tschögglberg high plateau

Working together for a clean mountain environment: ‘Do good and talk about it’ – a motto that seems very fitting for CleanUP Days. The cross-border litter collection campaign is more than just another clean-up operation. It aims to raise awareness and promote (environmental) consciousness.

Our mountains are a precious treasure: they offer relaxation, invite us to exercise in the fresh air and are a valuable natural heritage. We, the Tschögglberg high plateau destination with the three tourist associations Hafling-Vöran-Meran 2000, Mölten and Jenesien, are participating in the CleanUP Days together with 12 other destinations in South Tyrol. From september 18 to 21, 2025 we will be sending a joint message for a clean and intact mountain world. Participation is a matter close to our hearts: together with all interested parties, we want to actively contribute to the care and preservation of our unique mountain world.

What are CleanUP Days?

CleanUP Days is a cross-border initiative that was launched on International CleanUP Day, which takes place annually on September 20th. The multi-day campaign is organised by the PATRON e.V. association in close cooperation with numerous local partners and now spans the entire Alpine region. The aim is to invite nature lovers to take action for a clean environment. Anyone can participate by collecting rubbish in nature. The focus is not only on cleaning up, but also on raising awareness of sustainable use of our environment.

What is a CleanUP Kit?

To make participation in CleanUP Days as easy as possible, so-called CleanUP Kits are provided. A CleanUP Kit consists of a rubbish bag and reusable stainless steel litter pickers. Equipped with these, participants can collect the rubbish they find while hiking or walking and then dispose of it in the containers or rubbish collection points provided.
The CleanUP Kits are free of charge and can be picked up at participating information offices and designated distribution points (see below). Detailed information about the kits themselves is available on the PATRON website.

5 reasons why we are participating

Did you know that a classic paper tissue takes five years to decompose in nature? A plastic bag takes 200 years, a plastic bottle 500 years and an aluminium can even 600 years to completely decompose! Of course, the primary goal of CleanUP Days is to rid our mountains of rubbish. But there are other reasons why we decided to take part:

1. Protecting our mountains
The Tschögglberg high plateau is a natural paradise that must be preserved. Every piece of packaging collected and every item of rubbish removed contributes to the preservation of this precious landscape.
2. Raising awareness
Through our participation, we want to raise awareness of the issue of rubbish among guests and locals. Only those who recognise the problem can change their behaviour.
3. Community involvement
CleanUP Days are an initiative that brings people together. Together, environmental protection not only makes sense, it is also fun.
4. Supporting sustainable initiatives
As a sustainability-oriented destination, we are happy to support projects that are specifically committed to environmental protection.
5. Setting an example
We want to lead by example and show that every contribution counts. Even small actions can have a big impact.

How can you get involved?

Taking part is easy:
1. Pick up a CleanUP kit: Kits are available from the Hafling information office, the offices in Mölten and Jenesien, and other distribution points.
2. Choose your route: Whether it's your favourite hiking trail or walking path – you decide where you want to get active. Need inspiration? Drop by one of the information offices and we'll be happy to give you some tips!
3. Register: Enter your route on the CleanUP Map. This will make your efforts visible and part of the larger community.
4. Carry out your CleanUP: Use your CleanUP Kit to collect rubbish along the way, directly contributing to cleanliness and the protection of nature.
5. Tell the whole world! Capture your action with photos and share them on social media with the hashtag #plasticfreepeaks.
6. Dispose of waste correctly: You can dispose of the collected waste at the official waste collection points or in the containers provided.

By the way: Every Day is CleanUP Day. You can also do good outside of CleanUP Days: You can register a private CleanUP at any time on the CleanUP Map. Pack your CleanUP Kit for your next hike and off you go!

The little Oswald church under the Ifinger mountain

The little Oswald church under the Ifinger mountain
Between the peaks of Ifinger and Plattinger, at the foot of the Oswaldscharte (gap of S. Oswald), an inconspicuous church with a small tower stands at 1,185 m above sea level on a small flat alpine pasture. The building, which interestingly does not have any hiking trail leading directly past or to it, nevertheless experiences great crowds once a year. Every year on 5 August, the inhabitants of the communities of Hafling and Schenna make a pilgrimage to that small church Meran 2000 to ask Saint Oswald (in Hafling "Oaswold") for protection from storms.
