Just a few minutes from Lana, a different world awaits. In around six minutes, the cable car takes you up to car-free Mount Vigiljoch at 1,486 metres above sea level, with more than 100 kilometres of hiking trails to explore. At the top, peaceful forests, flowering larch meadows, welcoming alpine huts and magnificent views of the Dolomites and the main Alpine ridge await. If you'd like to venture even higher, the nostalgic chairlift takes you comfortably up to 1,814 metres. A place for hiking, fresh mountain air and simply enjoying nature.
Alpine Nature and Cultural Treasures
Mount Vigiljoch is home to a rich variety of alpine plants and wildlife. In spring, crocuses bring colour to the meadows, followed by alpine roses, gentians and wild orchids. One particularly idyllic spot is Schwarze Lacke, a small natural pond that provides a valuable habitat for frogs, dragonflies, fish and newts.
Larch trees are another defining feature of Mount Vigiljoch. In spring, their needles glow a delicate light green, while in autumn they transform the landscape into warm shades of gold and orange. In winter, the trails invite visitors to enjoy peaceful winter walks and snowshoe hikes surrounded by nature. Each season reveals a different side of this special mountain.
Nestled among the alpine meadows stands the little Church of St. Vigilius, also known locally as the “Jocher Kirchl”. First mentioned in historical records in the 13th century, the chapel is one of Mount Vigiljoch's cultural treasures. Its well-preserved 14th-century frescoes are particularly worth seeing.
