San Martino in Val Passiria Valley: rich in tradition, broad-minded, close to nature

With its two hamlets Sorgente and Saltusio, San Martino/St. Martin is the largest municipality in the Val Passiria Valley. 16km away from Merano, this is a village with plenty of nature and history. Not only does it delight history lovers with its historic buildings and monuments, but it's also the perfect starting point for those who want to go hiking in the Hirzer mountain area. The Passeier waterfall, the baroque church in the centre of the village, the Malerhaus (Painter’s House) – which once housed an art school – and the Schildhöfe (aristocratic estates) shape the village and landscape in San Martino. But modern shops, cafés and a visitor brewery have sprung up next to the history-laden buildings – proving that San Martino has succeeded in combining tradition and modernity.
