Mountain Tour to the "Hohe Weiße" Peak (3,277 m)

Beautiful summit tour with an exposed ridge traverse and a very steep ascent to the summit

Directions

You start at the large car park in Pfelders (1,630 m) and follow hiking trail no. 8 along the access road towards Lazins. The trail passes the inn Lazinser Hof and continues to the Lazinser Alm Alp (1,882 m). From there, follow trail no. 8/24, initially climbing moderately through the head of the valley before ascending steep switchbacks until the terrain becomes somewhat flatter again. Following the historic military road, you eventually reach the Stettiner Hütte hut at 2,875 m.

From the hut Stettiner Hütte hut, follow trail marker no. 46 downhill to a small lake located around 50 metres lower. From there, ascend steeply southeastwards on an unmarked but clearly visible trail, partly indicated by cairns, through fine, very slippery marble scree. The route then continues along a narrow and exposed ridge towards the Grafscharte (3,088 m), which is often incorrectly referred to as the peak Grafspitze; the latter is actually located farther along the ridge.

From the notch, the route continues down along the still very exposed ridge. Using rock steps secured with cables, descend and then follow the ridge with a series of ups and downs until reaching the saddle at the northern foot of the peak Hohe Weiße.

From the saddle, follow the cairns for orientation. Ascend slightly to the left via short switchbacks, then keep to the right to climb through a short chimney. Continuing to the right, the route alternates between scree and rocky terrain with easy scrambling sections, eventually reaching the summit ridge. From here, the terrain becomes flatter and straightforward, leading to the summit of the Hohe Weiße peak (3,277 m).

Caution: the loose and slippery scree requires excellent sure-footedness, particularly on the exposed sections. In the steeper parts, special attention should also be paid to the risk of falling rocks.

The descent follows the same route via the Stettiner Hütte hut and Lazinser Alm Alp back to Pfelders.

The trail is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Recommended equipment

War sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing for the weather and bring sufficient water and provisions.

• Coming from Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße SS44 to St. Leonhard, continue towards Moos, take on the Timmelsjochstraße and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

• Coming from the Timmelsjoch, take on the Timmelsjochstraße to Moos and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

• Coming from the Jaufenpass towards St. Leonhard, take the Jaufenstraße SS44, continue towards Moos on the Timmelsjochstraße and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

Author's tip

This mountain tour requires a good physical condition, a head for heights and the highest level of surefootedness. Especially the exposed ridge over the Grafspitze and the steep ascent to the summit of the Hohe Weißen require the highest concentration. Otherwise the trail is easy to follow. Due to the snow situation, the tour is only suitable from the beginning/middle of July.

Always stay on marked trails, check the weather conditions before you hike and pay particular attention to snow, wet ground, or slippery sections.
